Where HAU works
As well as the main site in Kampala, Hospice Africa Uganda also operates two smaller services – in Hoima and in Mbarara.
Little Hospice Hoima
Starting with a very small volunteer set-up, Little Hospice Hoima (LHH) was founded in 1998 and began conducting palliative care services from a shop in the town centre.
Since then Little Hospice Hoima (LHH) has moved four times and currently the team of 18 run the only purpose-built Hospice outside Hoima town centre.
LHH were the initiators of the community volunteers program which has successfully spread to all the other sister branches of Hospice.
Hoima district has a population of over 400,000 people. It borders Lake Albert which recently had oil well found there. This discovery has led to the fast development to Hoima. Roads and prestige have changed the town rapidly.
LHH is meeting these growing needs and has adapted to the fast changes of Hoima town.
Mobile Hospice Mbarara
Hospice Mbarara brings modern methods of pain and symptom control, counseling and spiritual support to the patient and family.
Most patients are referred from Mbarara University Teaching Hospital, while others are self-referrals (through hearing of the work through villages and referred from private clinics.
More recently, patients who have never attended a health worker, are being referred from the villages by trained community volunteers. These trained community careers are trained by the Mobile Hospice Mbarara team at hospice or in the villages. They care for those at home and refer directly to the team if a patient requires help for difficult pain or other symptoms.
